Welcome to the Dennistoun Digest!
A place where Cllr Anthony Carroll will update on what he is up to, and what is happening about the Dennistoun Ward, & beyond!
Hello everyone! 💚
Welcome to the Dennistoun Digest (snazzy name in progress) - a place where your local Green Councillor Anthony Carroll (me!), will be updating on my work locally around the Dennsitoun ward.
Who am I? 🤔
I’ve been the Scottish Greens Councillor for the Dennistoun ward for just shy of 3 years now. Before that, I worked in a community centre in Springburn - giving advice on housing, welfare, and anything else that could pop up.
Now, I’m in an 11-strong Green Councillor group in Glasgow City Council, where I focus on waste & recycling, and asylum seeker justice on behalf of the group. I also sometimes deputise for the Lord Provost also for Civic Events in the City, which is why you’ll sometimes see my title to be “Bailie”!

Where does the Dennistoun ward cover? 📌
Despite being called the Dennistoun ward, I also cover Haghill, Drygate, and the High Street south of the M8, and Sighthill, Germiston, & Royston north of the M8. These communities all all have different needs & history to each other, but its a pleasure to represent them all.

What does a Councillor do? 👨💻
A Councillor represents local people in their Local Council. For me, I represent over 20,000 people in Glasgow City Council. That means they can come to me on a plethora of local issues to advocate on their behalf, such as:
Overflowing bins or missed collections
Housing issues like repairs
Welfare support like Council Tax reduction, or Housing Benefit
Improved investment in our communities, like better amenities for parks, public transport, and community spaces
On top of this, I also carry out work in the City Chambers on a range of Committees, and community groups locally, like:
Chairing the Dennistoun Area Partnership - who fund local community projects, including smaller infrastructure & green space proposals.
The Economy, Housing, Transport, & Regeneration Committee - does what it says on the tin! We scrutinise all the policies of those areas, and go from new retrofitting ideas for housing with electric wallpaper, to a regional, integrated public transport network.
The Environment & Liveable Neighbourhood Committee - where we look at approaches to things like our waste & recycling strategies, & the Council’s active travel plans.
Various community forums - from the Royston Strategy Group, to the Sighthill Local Delivery Group, and Dennistoun Community Council; there’s many different bodies that I attend to work with local communities in fighting together for making a fairer & greener neighbourhood.

What is this newsletter going to be about? 📰
I’ll be sharing what I am doing locally, on those committees, but also other political musings - on a city level and nationally. What those in Holyrood & Westminster do have a direct effect in Haghill & Wellpark, so worth keeping on our radar even on a local level.
Looking forward to giving you a slice of councillor life every week or two!
